Take Action

The United States is one of the richest nations in the world. So why aren't our schools thriving? Why are so many people - especially people of color - unemployed? Why are healthcare, housing and college education so unaffordable?

Our mission at UFE is to raise awareness about the root causes of economic inequality and support the growing movement for economic justice. This can take many forms. If you're interested in making the economy fairer and improving the quality of life in the U.S. for everyone, here are six easy steps you can take to help make that happen.

Step 1: Stay Informed

Information is the first step toward making a difference. UFE’s materials arm people with the necessary tools to promote economic justice:

  • Sign up for our e-newsletter.
  • Sign up to receive our UFE and RW newsletters.
  • Read and share our reports and workshop materials (available for free online) and our books.
  • Invite us to facilitate a workshop or speak to your organization or religious group.
  • Attend a national conference on social justice.

Step 2: Make Your Voice Heard

There are many ways to add your voice to the chorus of individuals who support changing the rules of our economy:

  • Sign up to receive Action Alerts on financial regulation, fair taxation, humane immigration reform and more.
  • Sign our petitions for progressive tax policy at both state and federal levels.
  • Contact state and national legislators.
  • Write letters to the editor or become a media spokesperson

Step 3: Become a Popular Educator

You don’t have to be an ‘expert’ to start raising awareness of issues of economic inequality:

  • Learn about our workshops and popular education methodology by attending a Training of Trainers Institute.
  • Host or organize a workshop in your area.
  • Use UFE materials in your work or activism.
  • Take part in creative action in your community.

Step 4: Take Part in Shareholder Activism

Since 1999, our Responsible Wealth project has been filing shareholder resolutions seeking corporate accountability on a variety of topics:

  • File or co-file a shareholder resolution.
  • Ask your mutual fund how it voted proxies in your name.
  • Vote your own proxies.
  • Attend an annual meeting.

Step 5: Promote Progressive Taxation

UFE supports fair taxation policies at state and federal levels through our Tax Fairness Organizing Collaborative (TFOC) and our estate tax work:

  • Show Congress your support for rolling back tax cuts on the wealthy by taking the Tax Fairness Pledge.
  • Help our TFOC member in your state by joining and supporting their campaign.
  • Join our network of activists who support a strong estate tax by signing our “Call to Preserve the Estate Tax."

Step 6: Continue Your Support of UFE/RW

  • If you’re local to Boston, volunteer in our office to provide administrative support.
  • Become a recurring donor – save paper and use our easy online donation service!
  • Give a gift membership or send literature to friends and family who might join.
  • Host a house party, workshop or speaking event for donors and potential donors.
